Tempest Reporting was founded in 1988, and for nearly 30 years we have maintained our vision of delivering the highest-quality reporting services and embracing the most up-to-date technology.

We are a team of highly-trained professionals led by Ariel Mumma, a reporter herself, who is fully committed to ensuring that you experience excellence every time you use Tempest Reporting. We understand your needs and the legal environment, and the tight deadlines we all have to meet.

The company was founded because many of the court reporting firms in Utah at the time were not using the most sophisticated litigation-support systems that were available, despite the fact that law firms required more advanced support.

In order to meet this need, we became one of first firms to accept transcripts from reporters and deliver transcripts to counsel by email. We were the first firm to offer compressed transcripts in Utah, and one of the first reporting to offer videoconferencing (first by ISDN (phone lines), and then over the internet).

Our Out-of-State Services

We also discovered a need for a Utah court reporting firm that could take depositions for attorneys from out-of-state. At the time, many court reporting companies wouldn’t take that kind of work because it was difficult to get paid from attorneys outside Utah. Tempest Reporting was able to find ways to circumvent these problems and develop a great program for working with lawyers across the country.

While this increased the amount of work coming in from outside the state, we also have many Utah-based clients as well.

Tempest Reporting specializes in providing professional, accurate services for attorneys in Utah, western Wyoming, and eastern Nevada. We are also in contact with many other court reporting firms throughout the country so we can help their clients who are currently working in Utah. We often subcontract work for them here.

We have experience working with cases both small and large from other jurisdictions. This includes taking large cases from federal court and multi-district litigation, as well as multiple-plaintiff and multiple defendant cases.

We offer litigation support, reporting, videoconferencing, videography, and other reporting and litigation services, and our teams will work with you as long and as often as you require our services.

Our main office is conveniently located in downtown Salt Lake City at 175 South Main, just minutes from nearly anywhere in the Salt Lake valley, and a few hours from just about anywhere in Utah. Most importantly, for travelers from out of state, we’re only 20 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport.

Ariel Mumma

Ariel Mumma was born and raised in San Francisco. She graduated from UC Davis and received an MFA from the University of Utah. She then began studying court reporting, though it took five years to complete the coursework because three schools closed while she was in attendance (the forth didn’t close until after she graduated).

Ariel started working as a court reporter in the early ‘80s and eventually set up her own firm in late ’88 and has never looked back. This was the opportunity she was looking for, and it allowed her to make her own decisions, her own mistakes, and her own success.

In her own words: “We’ve been in business since 1988 and had same owner for our entire existence. I want to continue on. Maybe I’ll retire someday. Maybe I’ll be carried out of the office feet first.”
